Memories
As you may know, our family has had a lot of people pass away in the last few years. Its been a rough patch to say the least. Often I find myself thinking back on good memories and wishing I could be there reliving that event or occasion.

Today I came across a quote which made me stop and think for a minute. Although i don't really agree philosophically with the nature of the quote, i do like what it has to say.

"The way we get to live forever is through memories stored in the hearts and souls of those whose lives we touch. That's our sould print. It's our comfort, our emotional nourishment at the end of the day and the end of a life. How wonderful that they are called up at will and savored randomly. It seems to me we should spend our lives in a conscious state of creating these meaningful moments that live on. Memories matter."

EcoNovus
I just registered a domain names "EcoNovus.net", which will be used to chronicle trends, technology, and news in the areas of alternative fuels, renewable fuel sources, green technology, as well as organic food stuffs, etc.

I'm pretty excited about this, and plan to use it for spreading awareness about things i'm interested in.

The name EcoNovus is derived from the following:
  • Late Latin oeco- household, from Greek oik-, oiko-, from oikos (meaning house).
  1. habitat or environment
  2. ecological or environmental
  • Latin:
  1. novel
  2. unusual
  3. extraordinary / news
  4. novelty
  5. a new thing
.

It should present me with some fun. I'll keep you informed as to my progress, or feel free to check EcoNovus.net

Spinning up again
I've been working on learning a new programming language and hope to implement a new version of this website that may be faster as well as more useful.

I plan to keep this as my primary personal blog, but am prepping the launch of a few other sites.
  1. The first site is HistoryWeaver.com and is to be a social networking site that is more oriented to connecting families, creating a collaborative family workspace with history affinities and event time lines.
  2. The second site is yet to be registered, but the concept will be to create a tracking and analysis site for green technology trends, developments and monetization opportunities.
  3. The third site is yet to be registered, but will be targeting people that have gluten allergies or are interested in a gluten-free diet for the serious health benefits it provides. Additional tools will be developed for tracking spending and creating baseline pricing data for typical food items compared to similar gluten-free options. This data will be available and can subscribed to for a modest fee. The fee will allow us to provide the subscriber with a tool for tracking recent purchases, seeing year to date expenditures for gluten-free vs non gluten-free foodstuffs and report on this. It can be used for tax deduction purposes for persons diagnosed with Celiac disease. See this article for details
  4. The last site i'm working on is DirtDistributors.com which i do not have a clear plan for yet. Originally it was going to be used as a site for construction, excavation, and development folks to post clean fill dirt and find clean fill dirt. It was a very niche market idea and based on some market research it appears to be too small of a niche to be viable at this time. I am considering selling the domain to the highest bidder, as I think the name may be of interest to someone wanting to run a site that does expose's (posts "dirt" about someone or something) or celebrity gossip. Thats not quite my type of thing, so i'd be happy to sell this site to someone who could use it for that purpose.

Anyhow, big ideas on the horizon.

Trying to get back to...
Posting again. What an embarasement, its been nearly a year since my last post! I can't even believe that.

Well, on a side note, i have been working on a script to parse all of my music data from last.fm and store it in my own database.

Also, i've been working on a database/program that keeps track of my bills i need to pay, and reminds me to pay them :)

Lastly, when i have a few spare minutes on my hands, I've been wasting them playing Desktop Tower Defense its a browser based free game that sucks away minutes of your time before you know it.

Your online persona could come back to bite you!
Its very true that many employers will research the internet when reviewing job applicants. With new sites such as myspace, flickr, and others such as personal blogs, you provide a potential (or your current) employer with lots of information about you. If you are in a position where this type of data might impact your job, maybe you should think twice about what your are posting. Or at least consider this, "what would my boss say if he/she read this". Its just something to think about.

Reliving the sports card days
Ah, the good 'ol days. I just read an article on baseball card collecting over at a site I frequently read (Kottke.org. I remember the glory days beginning back around 1987 when I got ahold of my first baseball cards. The smell of the dusty gum that came in the wax packs, the little colorful pieces of cardboard that had pictures and stats for all the players in the league. Spending every cent i ever earned or was given on buying just one more pack of topps or donruss 1989 baseball cards to try to get a Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie card.

I still have quite a few of my cards that were good, primarily collected between 1990 and 1999. That was the biggest hobby i had for a long span of my life. Then came the internet and computer games.

Its refreshing to think back to how such simple interests as little pieces of cardboard, players names and stats, provided so much excitement and satisfaction.

Fight Club... Again?
Its been several years since one of my favorite movies, Fight Club, was released. At the time of that movie, I know that myself and several friends toyed with the idea. Additionally, news coverage showed several groups that had started such activities in their local areas (many of which were shut down by police).

Now, its back! Computer Programmer Fight Club has sprung up in Silicon Valley, and is being covered by Wired Magazine. These guys do some crazy stuff, including having "Blunt Knife Fights". You gotta check the photos out of this stuff. Its hard to tell how hard the guys go at it, but some of them got a little bloody so they aren't completely playing. It looks as if some of the guys know various forms of martial arts and try them out on each other.

Its interesting if nothing else.

Update: Pandora.fm
This website (Pandora)was posted on my site a few weeks back, as a great way to listen to music by artists you haven't heard of.

Some of you may have heard about Last.fm which is a website that allows you to listen to music (however not as well as pandora) but is excellent in terms of tracking, tagging, and finding new artists by use of many many tracking and analysis functions. For those of you who really like music and finding new music, you should try out Pandora.fm which blends the two sites together to allow the great streaming features of pandora with the great tracking and social features of last.fm

give it a try, all you need is a last.fm account and you're set!

Musicscene
I went to a concert last night at the Crystal Ballroom and it was really good. It was just a two concert show, which was great because they cut right through any crap bands.
  • First up was Bryan Free who some of you readers will recognize as being a GFU alum. He has a really great voice and plays some mad keyboard. Not to mention he busted out a side of electronic keyboard and even the accordian! Whatever the case, he is an excellent musician and I'm glad to say that I have just about every CD he has released.
  • Next up was Bass Boosa - a band from the UK. This was their only show in the USA, and it was their first! It was super fun to see because they were so excited to be playing for a crowd like us. It was a really excited group, and everyone was really into the music.

Overall it was a super fun concert, and pretty different than most I go to at the Crystal Ballroom. We took some photos that i'll be posting up soon.
